The right to buy legislation differs for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. In the UK you can apply for this scheme if your council property is your only/main home and self-contained. You also have to be a secure tenant and have had a public sector landlord for at least 5 non-consecutive years.

The ‘Right to Buy’ legislation also allows joint applications for the person you share the tenancy with or up to 3 of your family members – if they have lived with you over the past 12 months.
